When the summer months roll around, it's time to break out the cooling unit in your home. But if you're looking to upgrade your current model, there are a few things you'll need to consider before making a purchase. Here's a quick guide on how to pick the perfect cooling unit for your home.

Determine What Size You Need
The first step in choosing the right cooling unit is determining what size you need for your space. A professional installer will be able to assess your home and recommend an appropriate size based on factors like square footage, ceiling height, insulation levels, and more. If you choose a unit that's too small, it won’t effectively cool the space; conversely, purchasing one that’s too big can cause your electricity bills to skyrocket.

Consider Your Budget
Before you start shopping around for a new cooling unit, be sure to set a budget and only look at models within that price range. Keep in mind that larger units typically come with higher price tags than smaller models—but don't sacrifice size just to save money as it could cost you more in the long run! Additionally, research any additional costs associated with installation or maintenance so there aren't any surprises when all is said and done.

Look at Energy Efficiency Ratings
When selecting a new cooling system, be sure to check out its EER (energy efficiency ratings). The EER is an industry-standard rating used to measure how well a cooling system operates compared to other similar models—the higher the rating, the better its performance will be in terms of conserving energy and saving you money. Make sure that whichever model you decide on has an EER of at least 8 or 9—anything lower likely won't perform as well as its more efficient counterparts.

Research Different Types of Cooling Units
Not all cooling systems are created equal. There are several different types of units available on the market today including window air conditioners, portable air conditioners, ductless mini-splits, central air conditioning systems, and more—each with its own unique features and benefits depending on your needs and budget. Do some research about each type before making any decisions so that you know which one is best suited for your home and lifestyle.

Don’t Forget About the Maintenance
Finally, don't forget about maintenance. Regularly cleaning and servicing your new cooling system will help keep it running efficiently and effectively throughout its lifespan—while also helping prevent potentially costly repairs down the line due to lack of upkeep, not to mention saving energy. Make sure that whoever installs your new system also provides routine maintenance plans so you're always prepared for whatever comes next.

Choosing the right cooling unit for your home doesn't have to be difficult or overwhelming—just follow these five simple tips. From determining what size is best suited for your space and considering budget restrictions all the way through researching different types of units and remembering routine maintenance plans—you'll be ready to make an informed decision about which system will work best for you in no time.
