Let’s face it: We all know moving is a pain. And according to the American Moving & Storage Association, the average move in the U.S. costs a shocking $5,630.

Of course, costs will vary greatly upon family size, house size and location. However, it's safe to say that moving is often more expensive than expected. This brings many to the question: should you hire a pro mover, or enlist the help of a few friends and DIY.

To help you come to a conclusion about your move, New York-based Roadway Moving pulled together a list of the top moving costs, and a comparison of what you'll spend if you do it yourself or hire out. Now keep in mind a moving company curated this breakdown, so it may be a teeny bit biased. Do your own research to determine what will be most cost-effective for you.
