In our new Updates on Updates series, we take a look at some of the top home decor trends that are capturing the minds and hearts of homeowners across the U.S. Each month, we’ll bring you the most up-to-date interior design styles.

One of the simplest, but most impactful, updates you can make to a space is a fresh coat of paint. No matter the room, a new color can completely change the look and feel of any area of your home. As a real estate professional, it's your job to help your clients prepare their homes to be listed. Aside from staging, inexpensive updates like a fresh coat of paint can go a long way when it comes time to show a home.

This year, as we’re set to enter the third year of the pandemic, paint color trends are turning toward the serene. With all the noise and anxiety that still fill many of our days, it makes sense that almost every major paint company has one color on their mind: Green.

Earthy, natural tones are soothing to most people. The grayish green colors that are pictured below, with one exception, illustrate the desire to incorporate those tones in our own homes. Keeping with that, here are the top paint colors of 2022:

Evergreen Fog

Sherwin-Williams’ choice for the color of the year is Evergreen Fog. With a hint of blue, this grayish green color is subtle, but can make a big statement depending on how your clients decide to decorate their space.

“Evergreen Fog is a sophisticated wash of color for spaces that crave a subtle yet stunning statement shade,” said Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams, in a statement.

Olive Sprig

Olive Sprig is an organic tone that represents regrowth and healing in the midst of the pandemic. This color is PPG’s choice for color of the year. With its calming nature, it’s the perfect accent to any room as many of us have been stuck in the digital world for close to two years.

"As many of us know following a year of lockdown, the easiest way to shift your mindset is to change your environment," said Amy Donato, senior color marketing manager at PPG, in a statement.

October Mist

Like most of the other colors listed, October Mist is a meditative color that provides harmony in any space that a homeowner may choose to paint. October Mist is Benjamin Moore’s choice for 2022’s color of the year and it, too, is a grayish green that is both dynamic and calming.

“As the spaces in our homes continue to evolve, we uncover more opportunities to express our individuality and leverage the power of color to design environments that serve different functions and styles,” said Andrea Magno, director of color marketing & development at Benjamin Moore, in a press release.

Blanched Thyme

Blanched Thyme is slightly warmer than the other colors on this list. It’s one of 12 colors of the year that Valspar announced, and pairs well with wood tones. This, more than any other color on this list, will bring an organic feel to any space in a client's home. If your client is still working from home, consider suggesting they paint their home office this color.

“Calming and nourishing – this natural shade encourages a calm balance within yourself and within your home,” said Sue Kim, color marketing manager at Valspar, said in a statement.

Breezeway

The lightest of all the colors featured here, Breezeway is just that…a breezy color that conjures up images of a windy day by the beach. Behr’s choice for color of the year is a breath of fresh air; the light pastel is reminiscent of sea glass. Perhaps the most dynamic of all the colors listed, Breezeway is another tranquil greyish green tone.

“Whether it’s lacing up our hiking boots or breaking out the gardening tools, Breezeway inspires us to fully embrace the hobbies or adventures, both near and far, that excite us,” said Erika Woelfel, VP of color and creative services at Behr Paint Company, in a statement.

Very Peri

There’s always one wild card… Very Peri comes a bit from left field, but the color is a major statement in any room. Pantone’s choice for color of the year is a vibrant periwinkle with undertones of violet. The hue is a departure from the calming colors that most other paint companies predict will dominate 2022.

“As we move into a world of unprecedented change, the selection of [Very Peri] brings a novel perspective and vision of the trusted and beloved blue color family,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director at the Pantone Color Institute, in a statement.

With less of a variety to choose from, it’s clear that greyish green tones will dominate the interior design space for months to come. However, as Pantone’s choice for color of the year clearly illustrates, there is always room to explore and be playful when choosing a new paint color. Be sure to share this list with any of your clients who will be putting their homes on the market in the near future!
