Tankless water heaters are becoming increasingly popular because they are a more efficient way to heat water. However, they must be properly taken care of to extend their lives. Here are four ways to help your tankless water heater last longer.

Keep It Clean
Cleanliness is essential if you want to extend the life of your tankless hot water heater. Regularly clean both the inside and outside of your unit. A vinegar solution can be used to clean the interior, and a damp cloth can be used to clean the exterior. Vinegar is also effective at descaling heating elements, which aids in efficiency. Every few months, flush your unit to remove any accumulated sediment.

Descale Regularly
Descaling is the removal of chemicals from the water that can accumulate on the inside of your tankless water heater. These chemicals have the potential to cause corrosion and other issues. To help prevent these problems, descale your unit at least once a year. Hot water heaters that aren't descaled regularly can develop scale buildup issues, reducing their efficiency and shortening their lifespan. Follow the manufacturer's instructions when descaling to avoid damaging the unit.

Replace Old Parts
Parts in your tankless water heater will wear out and break down over time. It is critical to replace these parts as soon as they fail to avoid further damage. The heating elements, thermocouples and gas valves are the most likely to need replacement. These parts are available at most hardware stores and online. Use genuine replacement parts designed for your specific tankless water heater model. Since each hot water heater is unique, ensure you get the correct details. You may void your warranty or cause other issues if you use the incorrect parts.

Schedule Regular Maintenance
Water heater maintenance is essential for all water heaters, but it is especially critical for tankless units. During maintenance, a technician will inspect and clean your unit as needed. They will also look for worn or damaged parts that need to be replaced. Maintenance should be performed at least once a year, but more frequently if your hot water heater is used often. Follow these tips if you have a tankless water heater to ensure that it lasts as long as possible. Your tankless water heater can last for many years if properly maintained.

These are just a few of the things you should do to maintain and extend the life of your tankless water heater. Contact your local water heater professionals for assistance if you have any general questions about maintenance or tankless water heaters.
