With all the company, cooking and extra lighting this time of year, energy use skyrockets and so do utility bills. As we continue to shop for the holidays, most of us are looking for any way to save.

Over the holidays, there are tremendous amounts of ways we can save energy, one of them being the lighting on your house and on your Christmas tree. What many don’t realize is that just one string of lights over the course of the holidays will cost $25 to power.  If we can switch our traditional lights to LED lights, that one strand is going to cost you about 50 cents, according to Homeselfe.

Using a timer for lights or unplugging them so they are only running for six hours a day at most is also highly recommended. Aside from lights, there are more ways to cut down on energy waste around the house:

  • While cooking, take all the ingredients out at once, so you are not constantly opening the refrigerator, wasting energy.
  • Make sure you’re using the right size pot for the right size burner. Using a bigger pan or burner than you need wastes unnecessary energy.
  • If you are lighting up the fireplace this Christmas or New Years, make sure you turn down the thermostat. You never want to go over 68 degrees, so bundle up!
