The first Lessons in Leadership of 2023 is here. After an introduction by RISMedia Founder John Featherston, Dermot Buffini, CEO of Buffini & Company, and Nick Bailey, President & CEO of RE/MAX, shared a half-hour conversation about their approaches to leadership. They shared everything from what other leaders inspire them, to which books have helped them, to how Bailey is handling his leadership as the 50th anniversary of the RE/MAX brand approaches. For the second half, Featherston rejoined the panelists and opened the floor to questions from listeners.
Key takeaways:
- The best leaders are the ones who are most direct.
- You can’t know how to lead your clients and team unless you know how they’re feeling.
- You never stop being a student, even when in a leadership role.
- Opportunities will always be around so long as you realize that and take advantage of them.
Here’s what our esteemed panelists had to say:
“The proof is in the pudding, because people come to you Dermot, as they come to Nick and RE/MAX because you have established independently, both of you, two clubs that people in this profession want to be part of because they can better their personal and professional performances,” – John Featherston
“There are so many demands on your job that take you in this direction, they take you toward Wall Street, they take you toward shareholders, toward franchisees, [but] the people you ultimately serve is agents and brokers in the field,” – Dermot Buffini
“My number one fear was getting fired, not because I did something wrong or did something unethical, but guess what happened to me? I got fired, once, and I thought ‘my biggest fear is coming true’... I look at it and it was one of the best things because it caused me to kind of reevaluate. It was just a really important growth moment for me,” – Nick Bailey
